happy new year
Happy New Year - Gung Hay Fat Choy! - Year of the Pig (Ding Hai) - You may be surprised to learn that today is the 30th day of the 12th month of the year 4603. This means that tomorrow will be 1/1/4604 (18 Feb 2007)
Legend has it that in ancient times, Buddha asked all the animals to meet him on Chinese New Year. Twelve came, and Buddha named a year after each one. He announced that the people born in each animal's year would have some of that animal's personality. Those born in pig years tend to have excellent manners, make and keep friends, work very hard, and appreciate luxury. They are very loving and make loyal partners.
Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The 15th day of the new year is called the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade.
Fireworks are a very important part of Chinese "New Year" celebrations - every year many people die and are injured and killed - According to the State Administration of Work Safety, China has an average of 406 fireworks accidents every year with 445 deaths.(Which probably means that it could be in the thousands)

Chinese "pizza"
Hot and delicious, "Pizza" Chinese style, in a 'hole in the wall' restaurant in the centre of the city.
This "Chinese" style pizza has no tomatoes, no cheese, and nothing that could be called 'pizzaish' except perhaps the base, a 'crusty' dough that is exactly like you might make at home. Although not real pizza, they are still pretty good, with ground pork, spring onions, chilli powder and grated ginger This style of pizza is supposedly from one of China's ethnic minorities, known as the "Tujia" (土家族) minority, who mostly hail from Hubei province.
