Huaihua - main street - fruit man and old woman - passing the time and catching-up on some gossip. This man sells his fruit - usually water melon and bananas - from the same place everyday beginning the day early - he takes his cart to this location before 8am he sits all day and usually stays 'till after 9pm. The 'older woman' is one of thousands in Huaihua who walk the streets day and night collecting - what we would consider to be garbage - they not only help to keep the streets free of waste but also recycle the collected mater. The waste is taken to a central location where they are paid a couple of yuan per kilo.

Huaihua - centre - market - chicken man - Chicken is an integral part of daily life in China and a mainstay of Chinese cuisine. Chinese customers prefer their chickens whole, and not just because they eat nearly every part of the bird. I have been told - "It's good luck from top to bottom." - "You can't put pieces of chicken on a shrine for your ancestors. It would be very inauspicious."

Huaihua - centre - market - bread woman - "BaoZi" - "steamed buns" The Chinese like their bread steaming hot. Rather than baked bread, the Chinese prefer to eat steamed bread, which is why they look pale and uncooked to the Western eye. The dough is steamed over a pan of boiling water and the bread is served hot.
